Social Pharmacy
Free access to essential medication for uninsured and vulnerable people through solidarity, reuse, and responsible resource management.
What’s it about?
The Social Pharmacy of Kapnikos Stathmos Katerini is a community-driven initiative designed to provide essential pharmaceutical services to vulnerable populations in the region.
For more than a decade, this project addresses the healthcare needs of those who are financially disadvantaged, uninsured, or otherwise unable to access necessary medications by upcycling donated old medication, embodying the principles of a circular economy. This not only prevents a vast amount of waste but also reuses resources beneficially for people and the environment.
The primary objectives of the Social Pharmacy are to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their financial status, have access to essential medications, to raise awareness for the unsustainable waste of medication, and to foster a sense of community and solidarity by supporting the healthcare needs of the most vulnerable.
The target population primarily includes struggling individuals and families, uninsured or underinsured persons, elderly residents on fixed incomes, and refugees and migrants in need of medical support. The pharmacy operates on a volunteer-based model, leveraging the expertise of local pharmacists, healthcare professionals, and community volunteers. Medications are sourced exclusively through donations from individuals, pharmaceutical companies, and local pharmacies, ensuring a sustainable supply chain.
Another essential aspect of the Social Pharmacy is its civil protection character by ensuring preparedness for natural catastrophes or market shortages. With a stock of around 16,000 drugs and even more medical materials, which are publicly accessible, the pharmacy provides state and private healthcare providers the opportunity to find drugs they can’t source elsewhere. During crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Social Pharmacy played a crucial role by supplying healthcare providers with masks, gloves, and other necessary supplies.
The Social Pharmacy of Kapnikos Stathmos Katerini is a vital resource for the community, providing essential healthcare services to those in need. By promoting health equity, fostering a spirit of solidarity, and adhering to principles of sustainability, the Social Pharmacy not only improves individual health outcomes and less chemical waste but also strengthens the community as a whole.
What are the exact dates of the activity?
The Social Pharmacy is running throughout the year (except state holidays). Because of this, volunteers interested to join have a great deal of flexibility regarding a project start and end date most suitable to their needs.
How is it organized / What do I do?
Volunteers are the backbone of our Social Pharmacy, playing a vital role in its daily operation. With more than 1,600 medicine packages on the shelves, they carry out regular quality checks and ensure that each item is properly sorted and stored, guaranteeing safe and efficient service for our patients.
Every delivery is carefully inspected by volunteers before being registered in our online database and assigned a unique identification number. They are also responsible for verifying that all recorded information accurately matches the physical stock, ensuring consistency, traceability, and reliability in our system.
Our organization’s cross-project approach encourages participants to engage in other initiatives taking place during their stay in Kapnikos, while also welcoming contributions from members of those projects in return. This reciprocal involvement fosters collaboration, broadens learning experiences, and strengthens connections across different activities.
As in any shared community, participants also take on responsibilities related to the upkeep of the facilities, such as cleaning common areas, assisting with daily maintenance tasks, and preparing firewood to meet heating needs.
When and how many hours do I work?
The working week runs from Monday to Friday with Saturday and Sunday being task-free. Additionally, every volunteer is entitled to optional vacation days (2 days for every month).
